This fort housed 800 infantry soldiers whose barracks, granaries, latrine, and hospital remain preserved at Housesteads Fort (Vercovicium), with archaeological evidence showing wine amphorae fragments imported from Gaul, Italy, and Spain scattered throughout the site. Pay the £9-11 English Heritage entry and walk through barracks to the commanding officer's house where wine amphorae were stored as officers' privilege, then visit the communal latrine (20+ seats) where soldiers socialized while drinking posca (sour wine) 300 miles north of Londinium.
🔄 BACKUP: Free views from the car park show the Wall stretching east-west. Even without entry, you understand the scale + isolation = wine was psychological survival.
