   Nearly 780 wooden writing tablets survive from Vindolanda's waterlogged soil, mentioning wine stocks, wine shipments, and desperate beer requests from 1st-2nd century legionaries who considered wine civilization and beer barbarism. Pay the £12-14 entry (includes fort and museums) and find the tablet gallery in the on-site museum at Vindolanda Fort (near Bardon Mill), where staff can point to translations mentioning "cervesam" (Celtic beer) or wine inventory lists — you're reading complaints written by miserable Romans who documented their cravings.

   🔄 BACKUP: British Museum (London) has many Vindolanda tablets. But seeing them at the site where they were buried hits harder - you're standing where the complaints were written.

   Vindolanda's waterlogged soil preserves organic materials like leather, wood, textiles, and tablets better than any Roman site in Britain, with excavations continuing every summer (active Mon-Fri, April-September, weather permitting) where new tablets are still being found. Visit on a weekday during dig season to watch archaeologists uncover 1,900-year-old shopping lists, and ask excavators during breaks: "Have you found any wine references this season?" — they love chatting about discoveries in progress.

   🔄 BACKUP: Even outside dig season, the preserved fort remains are extensive - barracks, granaries, bathhouse. Walk where legionaries walked, craving wine.

   Toast Commander Flavius Cerialis

   Flavius Cerialis, the Vindolanda commanding officer whose correspondence survives in the tablets, ordered wine from Gaul while his wife Sulpicia Lepidina received the famous birthday invitation containing the oldest surviving handwriting by a woman in Latin. Bring wine (English sparkling or any bottle) to the fort or nearby Once Brewed Inn/Twice Brewed Inn (5 minutes away) and toast: "To Flavius Cerialis, who ordered wine from Gaul and made sure we'd remember" — you're drinking what he desperately craved on this frontier.

   🔄 BACKUP: Any Hadrian's Wall pub works. The Once Brewed Inn and Twice Brewed Inn are walker favorites, stocked with wine now (no more emergency beer requests needed).
