   Book the Ercolani 'La Città Sotterranea' tour (€20, 1 hour) at ercolanimontepulciano.it or walk in. The tour descends 4 levels. On level 4, you'll find two authentic Etruscan tombs - one is a carved chamber, the other has visible niches. Ask your guide about the artifacts found here. Touch the ancient stone walls if they allow it - they're 2,500 years old.

   Discover the Ghibelline Escape Route

   Medieval refugees fled through these passages during the Guelf-Ghibelline wars.

   During the Ercolani tour, ask specifically about the 'escape passages.' The guide will show you where the Ghibellines hid when Florence attacked. Look for the narrow doorway that doesn't lead anywhere obvious - that's where families crawled to safety. Some passages still have soot marks from torches used 700 years ago.

   Massive Slavonian oak barrels, some over 100 years old.

   At Contucci (Via del Teatro, 1 - free entry), the cellar has barrels from the 1800s still in use. The staff will let you walk between them. Put your palm on the wood - it's cool from the constant cellar temperature. Some barrels hold 10,000+ liters. Ask which is the oldest barrel still aging wine.

   The town was named for its "noble wine" - this was aristocrat territory.

   End at E Lucevan Le Stelle wine bar (Piazza Grande) - the main square where nobles gathered. Order a Vino Nobile Riserva (€8-12/glass). Sit outside facing the Palazzo Comunale (city hall). You're drinking the same wine, in the same square, that Medici nobles drank 500 years ago. Sunset timing is perfect.
