Vino Nobile di Montepulciano Underground

Montepulciano sits on tufa rock, and for 500 years, noble families carved wine cellars 3 stories DOWN into it. The Ercolani cellars beneath Palazzo Tarugi go through Gothic passages, Ghibelline hideouts, Renaissance foundations, and two ACTUAL ETRUSCAN TOMBS. You'll drink Vino Nobile—Italy's first DOCG (1980)—in caves where refugees hid during medieval wars. This isn't a wine tour. It's archaeology with a corkscrew.

1. 1 Find the Etruscan Tombs History · Price: low

   Real Etruscan tombs from 2,500+ years ago, discovered during cellar excavations.

   Book the Ercolani 'La Città Sotterranea' tour (€20, 1 hour) at ercolanimontepulciano.it or walk in. The tour descends 4 levels. On level 4, you'll find two authentic Etruscan tombs - one is a carved chamber, the other has visible niches. Ask your guide about the artifacts found here. Touch the ancient stone walls if they allow it - they're 2,500 years old.

2. 2 Discover the Ghibelline Escape Route History · Price: low

   Medieval refugees fled through these passages during the Guelf-Ghibelline wars.

   During the Ercolani tour, ask specifically about the 'escape passages.' The guide will show you where the Ghibellines hid when Florence attacked. Look for the narrow doorway that doesn't lead anywhere obvious - that's where families crawled to safety. Some passages still have soot marks from torches used 700 years ago.

   Vino Nobile di Montepulciano was the FIRST wine in Italy to receive DOCG status in 1980.

4. 4 Touch the Giant Oak Barrels Wine · Free

   Massive Slavonian oak barrels, some over 100 years old.

   At Contucci (Via del Teatro, 1 - free entry), the cellar has barrels from the 1800s still in use. The staff will let you walk between them. Put your palm on the wood - it's cool from the constant cellar temperature. Some barrels hold 10,000+ liters. Ask which is the oldest barrel still aging wine.

5. 5 Drink Where the Nobility Drank Adventure · Price: moderate · Optional

   The town was named for its "noble wine" - this was aristocrat territory.

   End at E Lucevan Le Stelle wine bar (Piazza Grande) - the main square where nobles gathered. Order a Vino Nobile Riserva (€8-12/glass). Sit outside facing the Palazzo Comunale (city hall). You're drinking the same wine, in the same square, that Medici nobles drank 500 years ago. Sunset timing is perfect.

Insider tips

• De' Ricci's cathedral-cellar tour is €20 for 75 minutes and three wines, or €30 for six — the €20 figure belongs to De' Ricci, not to Ercolani, whose own site returned HTTP 500 on every attempt in this check

• Contucci publishes a paid, structured product: about two hours at €40 per person, or €25 without the plate of local products, 1 April to 6 January, Mondays, Tuesdays, Fridays and Saturdays at 11:00 and 15:30, up to twenty people, booked at least fifteen days ahead

• Visit in the afternoon - locals say the cellars "breathe" differently after the rock warms up

• Don't wear heels - stone stairs are worn smooth from 500 years of footsteps
