   Hike to the Crater Rim

   30 minutes up paved switchbacks to the edge of the volcano.

   From Pompeii, drive 30 min to Vesuvius parking lot (follow signs for "Gran Cono"). Pay €10 for crater access at vesuviopark.vivaticket.it (book ahead on weekends). The hike is 30 min up paved switchbacks. Guides are optional. The path passes the first bar ("Souvenir Bar Chalet") - keep going.

   Stand at the Crater Edge

   Look down into the volcano that buried Pompeii in 79 AD.

   At the rim, you'll see sulphur steam rising from vents. The crater is 600m wide, 200m deep. This volcano buried Pompeii - you just walked those streets this morning. In 79 AD, 2,000 people died here. The same volcanic soil now grows the wine you're about to drink.

   Order Wine at La Capannuccia

   Continue to "La Capannuccia" at the trail end - it has picnic tables with crater views. Order a glass of Lacryma Christi ("Tears of Christ") - €8-12. This is wine made from grapes grown on these exact slopes. Sit at the picnic tables overlooking the crater. You're drinking the volcano.
