From Rifugio Scoiattoli (2,255m) — accessible via chairlift from Bai de Dones or a 20-30min hike — follow the circular trail past the Five Towers and count how many battle trenches you can spot. You're walking a battlefield where soldiers fought at altitude.

   Backup: If trenches aren't obvious, ask at Rifugio Scoiattoli: "Where are the WWI trenches?" Or look for the museum signage - it's an official outdoor museum.

   These towers are DOLOMITE ROCK — formed 250 million years ago from coral reefs in the Tethys Ocean before the Mediterranean existed. Touch the limestone base of Torre Grande (the tallest) and look for ancient marine fossils embedded in the rock — you're touching what was once an ocean floor.

Arrive 30 minutes before sunset (16:30 winter / 17:30 summer) with a glass of wine from the rifugio (€7-10) or your own bottle. This is the SAME phenomenon as Chalet Tofana, but you're INSIDE it — the towers are 100 meters away. Time the color cascade: pale yellow → pink → deep rose → crimson → fade (15-20 minutes).

   If you stayed for the full sunset at Cinque Torri — Cortina's most photographed landmark — you're descending in darkness down a well-marked but steep 20-30min trail to Bai de Dones parking. BRING A HEADLAMP (this is the task) and descend slowly, counting how many other hikers have headlamps vs phone flashlights. The chairlift typically closes at 17:00, so if you're still up there after sunset, you're committed to the night hike.

   Backup: If you're too nervous to descend in darkness, catch the last chairlift down. Ask: "What happens if someone misses the last lift?" The answer involves a night hike or calling rifugio for help.
