   The State Road of the Dolomites was constructed 1901-1909 — BEFORE cars were common — built for tourism, not military like most Alpine roads. This 110km route connecting Bolzano to Cortina over two major passes exists because early 20th-century Austrians believed in scenic road tourism. Stop at Pordoi Pass (2,239m) or Falzarego Pass and look for historical markers about the road's construction. Take a photo of the elevation marker at Pordoi.

   🔄 BACKUP: If no plaques visible, check inside the Pordoi Pass rifugio for historical photos. Or ask when the road is typically closed (Nov-May in heavy snow years).

   Taste Trentodoc at 2,239 Meters

   Order "Trentodoc" sparkling wine at any rifugio along SR48 — NOT Prosecco. Trentodoc is Trentino's answer to Champagne: traditional method, 15 months minimum on lees, made from Champagne varietals (Chardonnay/Pinot Noir) at high-altitude vineyards (300-800m). When it arrives, ask: "What's the difference between this and Prosecco?" The answer reveals method (traditional vs tank), grapes (Champagne varietals vs Glera), and Alpine terroir vs Veneto hills.

   🔄 BACKUP: If no Trentodoc available, ask for their best sparkling wine and inquire where it's from.

   Find the Village That Named the Grape

   Gewürztraminer is LITERALLY named after the village of Tramin (Termeno in Italian) — "Gewürz" (German) = spicy, "Traminer" = from Tramin. Descend from Pordoi Pass toward Bolzano to this village where Romans grew grapes 2000 years ago. Drive into the village center, find Cantina Tramin winery, and take a photo next to anything that says "Traminer." You're standing at the BIRTHPLACE of Gewürztraminer.

   🔄 BACKUP: If Cantina Tramin is closed, look for the village church (13th century) or any wine bars. Ask: "Is this really where Gewürztraminer comes from?"

   Rick Steves called this "the most beautiful road in Europe" (#1 ranking), beloved by motorcyclists and drivers crossing from Italian-speaking Veneto into German-speaking Südtirol (Alto Adige). Count how many languages appear on road signs — they switch from Italian-only to Italian/German bilingual roughly at Pordoi Pass. Ask at any stop: "Where does Veneto end and Alto Adige begin?" You're driving through a cultural and linguistic border.
