At Cantina Tramin (Strada del Vino 144, Termeno/Tramin — 35km south of Ortisei, open Mon-Fri 9am-7pm, Sat until 5pm, closed Sun), walk into the tasting room. Look at the wall — the awards are displayed. Ask the staff: 'How many families contribute grapes to this wine?' The answer (190) is the punchline. Then ask: 'How do you keep quality so high with so many growers?'

   Cantina Tramin manages 57 hectares of Gewürztraminer — 22% of the cooperative's total plantings. Yields are set 30% BELOW what DOC law permits. When grapes arrive at the winery, they're graded: the best parcels go to the premium wines, the rest to the basic tier. Growers are paid MORE for higher-quality grapes. At Cantina Tramin tasting room (€10-15 for a guided selection), ask for a 3-wine Gewürztraminer tasting: (1) the basic Alto Adige DOC Gewürztraminer, (2) the Nussbaumer single-vineyard, (3) the Epokale if available (late harvest, rare). Tasting in this order shows you how the same cooperative, same grape, same village produces three quality tiers. The basic is excellent. The Nussbaumer is stunning. The Epokale is transcendent. Ask: 'What's different in the vineyard between the basic and the Nussbaumer?'

   Walk the Gewürztraminer Trail Through the Vineyards

   This trail walks you through the actual vineyards where the 100-point wine was grown. The signs explain the grape's history (documented in Tramin since the 1200s), the soil (gravel and clay at altitude), and why the extreme day-night temperature swings concentrate the aromatic compounds that make Gewürztraminer the most fragrant grape on Earth. The Gewürztraminer Trail starts in the center of Tramin/Termeno village — a 2km loop through the vineyards that supply Cantina Tramin, with informational signs in four languages. Follow the trail markers. Stop at each sign and read. Look at the vines — Gewürztraminer has distinctly pink-skinned berries (it's a mutation of Savagnin blanc). Touch the soil if it's exposed — the gravel drains fast, stressing the vine into concentrating flavor.

   🔄 BACKUP: If the trail is closed (rare) or you're short on time, drive through the vineyards on the Weinstraße. The rows of vines on steep terraces are visible from the road, and you can stop at any pullout for the same views the trail provides.
