1. 1 Find the House Where Ladin Culture Fights to Survive History · Free

   The building's exterior is itself a museum. All signage is in Ladin, Italian, and German. The Ladin flag (blue and white) flies above. Walk to Strëda Cësa di Ladins 83, the Cësa di Ladins (House of Ladin Culture), which houses Museum Gherëïna, the Ladin Education Directorate, and cultural offices. This is the cultural headquarters for a people who have survived 2,000 years of invasions, empires, and linguistic pressure. Walk around the building's exterior and read the trilingual plaques explaining the Cësa's mission. Find the inscription that says 'Museum de Gherëïna' in all three languages. This building is WHERE Ladin culture organizes its survival in the 21st century.

   Backup: If you're here on a weekend (museum closed), the exterior alone tells the story. The architecture is alpine (wood and stone), the flags are Ladin, the context is defiant cultural survival.

2. 2 Find the Skeleton From 6,000 Years Before Wine History · Price: moderate

   Archaeologists found a nearly complete skeleton of a young man dating to 6,000-7,000 years ago — the 'Gherëïna Man.' He lived here when these valleys were hunter-gatherer territory, 4,000 years BEFORE the Ladin language existed. Inside Museum de Gherëïna (Strëda Cësa di Ladins 83. Open Tue-Fri 10am-12:30pm, 2-6pm. Admission: €8 adults, €2.50 students, free under 18. Family ticket: €16), go to the archaeology room (first floor) and find the Gherëïna Man display case. Read the plaques (Ladin/Italian/German). He was 20-25 when he died and ate meat and wild plants, no grain. His bones are in the archaeology section.

   Backup: If the skeleton isn't displayed (conservation), the mammoth hunters exhibit shows tools from 10,000 years ago — stone blades and bone needles from Val Gardena caves.

3. 3 Decode the Kingdom Where Marmots Were Royalty History · Price: moderate

   The Fanes legend is the Ladin national epic. The Kingdom of Fanes was ruled by marmots with magical powers. Princess Dolasilla (marmot queen), King Laurin (dwarf with cursed rose garden), eternal light vs. darkness. It's the myth that explains the pink mountains, marmot colonies, and Ladin identity. In the same museum, second floor — Ladin legends section, find the Fanes exhibit panels and read the summary (available in English). Notice how the legend explains Enrosadira, the alpine ecology, and the Ladin refusal to disappear — all in one story.

   Backup: Ask museum staff: 'Can you explain Fanes?' They'll give you a pamphlet or show you a 10-minute video.

4. 4 Toast the Valley Where Wine Arrived by Trade, Not by Vine Wine · Price: moderate · Optional

   Val Gardena sits at 1,236m altitude — too high for grapevines. Wine has always arrived here via trade from Bolzano's valley floor, 900m lower. The Ladin relationship with wine is unique: they drink it passionately but don't grow a single grape. Every glass is an import from warmer valleys below. After the museum, walk to any enoteca or restaurant on Streda Rezia (Tubladel restaurant, the wine bar at Hotel Adler, or Wine & Beverages Rabanser at Streda Arnaria 41). Order a glass of Schiava (€5-7) and tell the bartender you just visited the museum. Ask: 'When did wine first reach Val Gardena?' The answer: probably Roman times (15 BC), when Rhaetian tribes began trading with Roman settlers in the valley. But it was always imported. The Ladins were herders and carvers, not vintners. Your glass traveled 35km uphill to reach you.

   Backup: If no wine bar is nearby, walk to any supermarket and read the wine labels. ALL wines say 'Bolzano,' 'Tramin,' or 'Alto Adige' — none say 'Val Gardena.' This valley's wine story is absence, not presence.
