   Starting in Nalles, you're at 300m altitude where Sauvignon Blanc reaches its northernmost viable point in Italy. The Weinstraße (Strada del Vino) is Italy's oldest wine road, stretching 70km from here to Salorno through every grape variety and microclimate in Alto Adige. From Nalles (15km northwest of Bolzano), every kilometer south changes the grape varieties, soil, and wine style. If cycling, rent e-bikes in Bolzano (€30-45/day) and take the train north to Nalles for the downhill route. The cycle path is flat to gently downhill, well-signed, and separated from traffic. Look for the vineyards on the hillside — these are among the most northerly commercial vineyards in Italy.

   🔄 BACKUP: If the full 70km is too long, do the 25km Bolzano-to-Tramin section — it passes through the most important grape transitions and can be done in 3-4 hours with stops.

   Taste Lagrein and St. Magdalener at Their Source

   At Bolzano (262m), you've descended into the warm valley floor where Lagrein thrives — the ONLY place on Earth it grows commercially. It needs the specific alluvial soil and valley heat of Gries district. On the hillside directly above, Santa Maddalena slopes produce St. Magdalener DOC. Same zip code, different altitude, different wine. Stop at Cantina Bolzano (Via San Maurizio 36) or Muri-Gries monastery vinotheque (Piazza Gries 21) for a 20-minute tasting. Ask for both side by side: Lagrein is dark, tannic, powerful — valley floor wine. St. Magdalener is light, cherry-bright, elegant — hillside wine. Ask: 'Which one is from higher up?' Taste will tell you before they answer. Budget: €8-12 for two glasses.

   🔄 BACKUP: If tasting rooms are closed, any Bolzano wine bar serves both. The Laubengasse arcade in the old town has multiple enotecas with by-the-glass options.

   Arrive in Tramin Where Gewürztraminer Was Born

   This village gave Gewürztraminer its name — 'Traminer' appears in records from the 1200s. The grape is a pink-skinned aromatic mutation that developed HERE in these specific conditions: gravel and clay soil, 300m altitude, extreme day-night temperature swings. You've cycled from Sauvignon territory to the birthplace of the world's most aromatic grape in 35km. At Cantina Tramin (Strada del Vino 144, open Mon-Fri 9am-7pm, Sat until 5pm), ask for their Gewürztraminer DOC (€8-12 tasting). Smell it before tasting — lychee, rose, Turkish delight. That intensity is the terroir you just cycled through. Ask: 'What makes Tramin Gewürztraminer different from Alsace?' The answer: altitude keeps it elegant where Alsace can be heavy.

   🔄 BACKUP: If Cantina Tramin is closed, any restaurant or bar in Tramin serves local Gewürztraminer. The village IS the grape — you can't avoid it.

   Finish at Salorno — the Linguistic and Viticultural Border

   Salorno is a triple border 35km south of Bolzano where the Weinstraße ends. Linguistically: south of here, German speakers disappear and Italian takes over completely. Viticulturally: vineyards shift from Alto Adige DOC to Trentino DOC — different rules, different styles, different identity. Climatically: the valley narrows here, creating a wind tunnel that defines the microclimates of everything to the north. Stand at the town bridge and look north up the valley — everything you cycled through is compressed into 70km visible from here. Look south: different province, different wine system, different culture. Salorno is the last bilingual town; south of here, Italian only.

   🔄 BACKUP: If you don't reach Salorno, Cortaccia/Kurtatsch (10km north) has the same border feeling and excellent wine stops at Kellerei Kurtatsch. The return to Bolzano is easy by train (20 min, bikes allowed).
