Val Gardena produces two tiers of carving: tourist tier (factory-made figurines, €10-30) and master tier (hand-carved originals, €500-5,000+). The difference is in the eyes and fingers — mass-produced figures have smooth, blank faces while master work has pupils that follow you and fingers with individual knuckles. In a souvenir shop, pick up a small figurine (€10-20) and look at the face — smooth, generic, expressionless. Then at Museum Gherëïna (Strëda Cësa di Ladins 83, €8, Tue-Sat 10am-12:30pm, 2-6pm) or UNIKA, find a master's figure with individual wrinkles, asymmetric features, emotion in the eyes. Ask any carver about the difference and they'll rant for 5 minutes about machine work destroying the tradition.
🔄 BACKUP: If you can't visit both, look for signed pieces in any shop. A carved signature on the base means hand-carved by a named master. No signature usually means machine-assisted production.
