The circular military cothon was 325 meters across with slips for 170-220 warships arranged radially around central Admiralty Island. The genius: from outside at sea, you couldn't see into the military port, but from the island tower, Carthage's admiral could see every approaching ship. This port launched Hannibal's father Hamilcar and supported three Punic Wars. When Rome won in 146 BC, they didn't just destroy Carthage — they spent 17 days burning it because this port was too strategically valuable to allow its existence. Visit the small Punic Port Museum for scale models showing the radial slip system, then walk the shoreline where the circular shape still reads clearly from water's edge.
