Tophet of Carthage - Sanctuary of Tanit

A sacred precinct dedicated to the Phoenician deities Tanit and Baal, containing over 20,000 burial urns. This haunting site spans 6,000 square meters and was used from Carthage's founding until its destruction in 146 BC. Oxford University research confirms this was a site of child sacrifice, though debate continues. The 'priest stele' found here is one of Phoenician archaeology's most significant discoveries.

The stelae standing in rows over cremation urns all carry the same formula carved by parents: 'To the great lady Tanit and to the lord Baal Hammon — may they hear my voice and bless me.' Oxford's Dr. Josephine Quinn concluded in 2014 that evidence for child sacrifice is overwhelming: over 20,000 urns, 6,000 stelae, nine descending layers of ash. Walk slowly through the rows, from rough limestone slabs (730-600 BC) to refined carved stones with the Sign of Tanit — triangle body, horizontal arms raised in blessing, circle head.

The Phoenicians invented the alphabet and built an empire from Atlantic to Levant, with this woman at the center. Find three different stelae showing her sign, noticing how crude early ones become refined by 300-200 BC with caducei flanking her and astral symbols above. Today she appears on Tunisian stamps and jewelry — she never left.

3. 3 Stand on Carthage's Circular Military Harbour — Rome Never Forgot This Port Adventure · Price: low

   You're looking at what terrified Rome for 100 years (Punic Ports, 400m north of Tophet along waterfront, same 12 TND ticket). The circular military cothon was 325 meters across with slips for 170-220 warships arranged radially around central Admiralty Island. The genius: from outside at sea, you couldn't see into the military port, but from the island tower, Carthage's admiral could see every approaching ship. This port launched Hannibal's father Hamilcar and supported three Punic Wars. When Rome won in 146 BC, they didn't just destroy Carthage — they spent 17 days burning it because this port was too strategically valuable to allow its existence. Visit the small Punic Port Museum for scale models showing the radial slip system, then walk the shoreline where the circular shape still reads clearly from water's edge.
