On October 30, 1987, at an official conference in Rome, Grombalia was declared the International City of the Vine — the only city in North Africa with that title. Walk into Grombalia town center (36.602°N, 10.501°E, 7km east of Domaine Neferis) and look for the vine monument at the central roundabout — this city never stopped making wine through Roman conquest, 700 years of Islamic rule, French colonization, and independence. The cooperative Cave Viticole Grombalia sits on Route de Sousse at KM 33, founded in 1948 after phylloxera nearly destroyed everything. Head there for a contrast tasting — ask for their Château Semmeche blanc or basic Cave de Grombalia Chardonnay (€5-10 per bottle), the grassroots response to crisis, completely different from the private estate experience.
🔄 BACKUP: If Cave Viticole is closed, simply walking Grombalia's central streets and agricultural outskirts reveals the scale of vine cultivation. The plain stretching from town toward the hills is almost entirely vineyard.
