   Stand Over a 2,600-Year-Old Phoenician Worship Site on Glass

   history $

   Archaeologists found THREE ritual pits cut directly into bedrock, each 3-4 metres wide, leading to underground vaults. Inside: a silver pendant linked to the cult of Astarte, an ivory sacred stone, and tableware from Phoenician drinking rituals. You walk over them on glass panels.

   Enter Palacio da Galeria museum (2 euros, FREE on Saturdays before 12:30). Find the glass floor panels over the three bothroi (ritual pits). This was a sanctuary to Baal Saphon, the storm god of sailors. It was INSIDE a living Phoenician city of 800-600 BC, not some remote outpost. Hours: Tue-Sat, 10am-12:30 / 2pm-5:30 (winter) or 3pm-6:30 (summer).

   Find the Phoenician Walls Nobody Queues For

   Behind a hotel near Largo da Misericordia, there are exposed Phoenician wall sections and an ox-hide altar sitting in the open air. Free. No crowds. No ticket booth.

   Cross Praca da Republica, turn into Largo da Misericordia, look left behind the A Muralha Hotel area. The Ruinas Fenicias are outdoor Phoenician wall sections with Moorish foundations layered on top. Free to view anytime. Combine with the museum visit for the full Phoenician picture.

   Climb the Bell Tower Where 7 Knights Are Buried

   In 1242, the Knights of Santiago took Tavira Castle. Seven knights died in the assault. They are supposedly entombed in Santa Maria do Castelo church, right next to the castle. The bell tower gives you the best panorama in town for 2.50 euros.

   Walk uphill to Tavira Castle (FREE entry). Then enter Santa Maria do Castelo church next door. Pay 2.50 euros for the bell tower. Climb for panoramic views of terracotta rooftops, Gilao River, church towers, Ria Formosa lagoon stretching to the Atlantic. The 7 Knights' tombs are inside.

   Eat at the 6-Table Restaurant That Sells Out by Afternoon

   Tasquinha da Paula has 6 tables. Cash only. Paula cooks one special per day. The octopus salad and cataplana sell out by early afternoon.

   Arrive before noon at Tasquinha da Paula in Tavira old town. Bring cash - no cards accepted. Order whatever Paula has today plus a local Castelao or Negra Mole red. A meal for two with wine costs about 45 euros. If it is full, try Brisa do Rio for daily-catch fish and cataplana with clams.

   Take the 1.70 Euro Ferry to a Barrier Island at Sunset

   Ilha de Tavira is an 11km barrier island in Ria Formosa Natural Park. The ferry from Cais das Quatro Aguas costs 1.70 euros return. Flamingos feed in the channels. The salt pans turn pink when salinity spikes.

   Take the year-round ferry from Cais das Quatro Aguas (1.70 euros return, 10 minutes). Walk the Atlantic-facing white sand beach. At sunset, turn around and look back toward Tavira and the Ria Formosa lagoon. The pink salt pans, the flamingos in the channels, and the fading light over the old town are genuinely surreal.
