Rare Phoenician urban sanctuary

Palacio da Galeria - Phoenician Sanctuary of Tavira

The Municipal Museum of Tavira occupies a restored palace with an extraordinary secret: beneath glass floor panels, you can see excavated Phoenician ritual pits from the 7th-6th centuries BC. This is one of the only documented urban Phoenician sanctuaries in Iberia, likely dedicated to Baal, the storm god.
