   Taylor's holds approximately 40 million litres of stock in their lodges. They lose the equivalent of 1,000 bottles PER DAY to evaporation - the angel's share. The black fungal growth on Porto's rooftops? That is decades of wine vapor feeding a living organism on the tiles.

   Book online at taylor.pt (sells out on weekends). Pay 25 euros for the self-guided audio tour in 13 languages plus 3-wine tasting: Chip Dry white port (pioneered in 1934), Late Bottled Vintage, and 10-Year-Old Tawny. Walk through the aging cellars and look up at the 630-litre seasoned oak casks stacked to the ceiling. Address: Rua do Choupelo 250, Vila Nova de Gaia.

   Drink the Port That Robert Parker Scored 100 Points

   Taylor's 1992 Vintage Port received a perfect 100 from Robert Parker, who called it "unquestionably the greatest young port I have ever tasted." It was made to commemorate Taylor's 300th anniversary.

   Ask about the Vintage Tasting upgrade (approximately 40-50 euros extra). It includes Taylor's vintage ports from the cellar including Quinta de Vargellas and Quinta de Terra Feita. If you want the theatrical option, ask about the traditional hot-tongs opening of a vintage port bottle.

   Learn How a London Innkeeper Built a 332-Year Empire

   Taylor's was founded in 1692 by Job Bearsley, a London innkeeper who owned The Ram Inn in Smithfield. He was NOT a port merchant. His grandson became the first British shipper to buy property in the Douro Valley in 1744. The current family is the 8th generation.

   The audio tour covers the full founding story. Key fact: the Methuen Treaty of 1703 made Portuguese wine enter England at one-third less duty than French wine. England was at war with France and claret was cut off. Port filled the void and became the defining British upper-class drink for 200 years.

   Order Chip Dry and Tonic on the Terrace With Peacocks

   Taylor's terrace overlooks Porto, the Douro River, Dom Luis I Bridge, the cathedral, and Clerigos Tower. Actual peacocks roam free in the garden. The Chip Dry and Tonic is Portugal's version of a G&T with 90 years of heritage.

   After the tasting, walk to Taylor's terrace. Order a Chip Dry and Tonic - white port over ice with tonic, mint, and salted almonds. This is how locals drink at 11am. The terrace has seating and peacocks wandering the garden. Less crowded than the main Porto viewpoints because you are actually drinking while watching.

   Walk Across the Bridge Eiffel's Student Built

   The Dom Luis I Bridge below Taylor's was designed by Theophile Seyrig, a former partner of Gustave Eiffel. Completed 1886, the upper deck is 45 metres above the river. Walk across for the approach to Taylor's.

   Cross Dom Luis I Bridge from Ribeira on the lower deck (10 minutes). Or take the Teleferico de Gaia cable car (6 euros one-way, 9 euros return, 5 minutes). Taylor's is uphill from the Gaia waterfront on Rua do Choupelo. Best time: late afternoon so you end on the terrace at golden hour.
