Domaine Leroy: The Rival Legend

In 2018, Lalou Bize-Leroy's Musigny Grand Cru dethroned Romanée-Conti as the world's most expensive wine. The 93-year-old matriarch still owns 25% of DRC but was ousted from its board in 1992 for competing. Her biodynamic domaine produces wines some collectors consider superior to DRC.

Insider Tips

  • Lalou Bize-Leroy had wine (1929 Musigny) rubbed on her lips at birth - she's been tasting wine for 93 years

  • In 1993, mildew destroyed most of her crop (only 700 liters of RSV) - she never abandoned biodynamics

  • She employs as many sorters as pickers during harvest (34 of each) - only perfect grapes make the cut

  • The Domaine farms 23 hectares including 9 Grand Crus and 8 Premier Crus
