Sancerre Rouge: The Forgotten Red Kingdom

Before phylloxera devastated Europe, Sancerre was 90% red wine - almost entirely Pinot Noir. Today, Sauvignon Blanc dominates, but ~420 hectares of Pinot remain. These light, floral reds are wildly underpriced compared to Burgundy - a complex Sancerre Rouge costs the same as average, unmemorable village Burgundy.

From the hilltop town of Sancerre, walk into the surrounding vineyards. Look for exposed chalk and limestone - this is Kimmeridgian marl, the same ancient seabed that makes Chablis and Champagne famous. Pinot Noir here reflects this terroir with unusual minerality.

At any tasting, ask to compare the producer's Sancerre Blanc (Sauvignon) and Sancerre Rouge (Pinot) from the same vineyard. Same soil, same winemaker, different grape. Notice how both show the chalky minerality of Kimmeridgian marl.
