   Enter the shop at Rua dos Ferreiros 107 (near Colégio Church). Walk to the back where the barrels are. Staff will offer you 3 small tasters of different styles plus a wedge of bolo de mel (Madeiran honey cake). Best time: weekday mornings when it's quiet. Saturdays may be reserved for tour groups - call ahead.

   Find the 1619 Cellar Mark

   The building predates the company by 231 years. Find evidence of its age.

   In the barrel room (behind the tasting counter), look for the oldest architectural features: stone archways, ceiling beams, and any date markers carved into the walls. Ask staff "What's the oldest part of this building?" - they love showing off the 1619 origins. The cellar was here 200 years before D'Oliveira bought it.

   Learn the Nearly-Extinct Grapes

   Ask about Terrantez and Bastardo - grape varieties nearly vanished from the island.

   During your free tasting, ask staff: "Do you have any Terrantez or Bastardo?" These are the two nearly-extinct noble grapes of Madeira. D'Oliveira may have bottles for sale (€100+) or samples for tasting at extra cost. Even if you can't taste them, staff will explain why these grapes nearly disappeared (phylloxera, replanting economics).

   Taste Wine Older Than Your Grandparents

   D'Oliveira has vintages from 1850, 1890, 1900, 1905, and 1912 - taste living history.

   After the free tasting, ask to try a vintage wine. The 1850 Verdelho (founding year) is the crown jewel - €30-50 per taste depending on vintage. Staff will pour from the open bottle behind the counter. Ask which year it is and check the label - you're drinking something from before your great-grandparents were born.

   Luís or Felipe D'Oliveira (5th generation) sometimes pour for serious collectors.

   Visit on a weekday, show genuine interest, and buy something. Ask staff if Luís or Felipe is available. They don't do formal appointments but sometimes appear for collectors. If you buy a vintage bottle (€200+), you may get the family treatment. The D'Oliveiras have been making wine here since 1850 - that's 175 years of family knowledge.
