   Apulum was the CAPITAL of Roman Dacia, home to XIII Gemina legion (The Twin Legion) — Rome's NORTHERNMOST major base where 20,000+ people lived. Romans planted vines immediately after arrival (106 AD) to supply legion wine rations (1 liter/day per soldier!). Enter Alba Carolina Fortress through any of 6 baroque gates (free entry), walk the star-shaped Vauban fortress walls built on Roman foundations, and find Roman columns/ruins (usually near Orthodox Cathedral). Imagine: 5,000 legionaries drinking 5,000 liters of wine DAILY.

   🔄 BACKUP: If Roman ruins are hard to find, visit Museum of Unification inside citadel — has Apulum artifacts including wine vessels from legion quarters.

   Descend Into the 70-Year Wine Catacombs

   Wine cellar in the CATACOMBS beneath the citadel — built into the same foundations where XIII Gemina stored grain and wine 2,000 years ago. Vinoteca Hugo (inside Alba Carolina Fortress fortifications) offers tours at 11am, 3pm, 7pm daily with 58,000-bottle storage capacity including 5,000+ bottles from 1952-1972 (Communist-era Romanian wines, preserved). You're tasting history TWICE: Roman cellar + Cold War vintages. Ask guide: "Are any bottles from pre-1989 Romania?" and request a Transylvanian white from the terrace overlooking the citadel.

   Toast Where Romania Became Romania

   December 1, 1918 — Romania's unification was declared in Alba Iulia when 100,000 Romanians gathered to proclaim "Greater Romania." This was the moment modern Romania was BORN at the former capital of ROMAN Dacia. Stand in front of Union Hall (Sala Unirii, neo-classical building inside citadel), read the 1918 proclamation plaque (Romanian/English), then find a nearby cafe or Vinoteca Hugo to order Romanian wine. Toast: "For December 1, 1918, when the Roman dream came full circle."

   🔄 BACKUP: If Union Hall is closed, the square itself is the site. Photograph the building + plaque. Perform the toast anywhere in the citadel with views of the hall.
