Saxons built this covered wooden stairway in 1642 so children and churchgoers could reach School Hill in winter without slipping on snow — 176 steps remain of the original 300, climbing the same slope that's been defended for 2,000+ years since Romans recognized this hilltop's strategic value. The Scholars' Stairs (Scara Școlarilor) start from Strada Școlli off Piața Cetății, leading through a covered wooden tunnel where light dapples through gaps and buskers often play at the top. Climb the 400-year-old planks, listen to your footsteps echo, and turn around at the top — the view down the tunnel is the most photographed angle in Sighișoara before continuing to the Church on the Hill with its 15th-century frescoes.
🔄 BACKUP: If stairs are crowded, walk the cobblestone streets up through the citadel instead — longer but equally atmospheric.
