   Stand at the Gate

   Stand at Brandenburg Gate on the west side. On November 9, 1989, approximately 5,000 people gathered here. At 9:03 PM, the first person dared to climb the 4-meter wall. "Complete strangers from East and West fell into one another's arms laughing and crying." Tens of thousands drank champagne and threw flowers.

   Find the Wall Line

   history Free

   Look for the double row of cobblestones in the ground - this marks exactly where the Wall stood. The bronze plaques read "Berliner Mauer 1961-1989." The Wall ran right between the Gate's columns. Hundreds of youths clambered up to dance on this spot.

   🔄 BACKUP: If you can't find the line, ask any local or look for tourists photographing the ground.

   Toast Freedom

   Bring a split of champagne or Sekt (German sparkling) from a nearby Spätkauf (late shop - there's one on Unter den Linden). Toast at the gate. Marlene Matakas, a West Berlin teacher, recalled: "We tucked several bottles of champagne under our arms" and drove to the Gate.
