   The wide stone steps in front of the David replica have the best view.

   Arrive 60 minutes before sunset. Walk to the stone steps directly in front of the bronze David replica (center of piazza). Sit on the 3rd or 4th row down from the top—you'll have the best framing with the balustrade in front of you. Spread out your wine and snacks. The Duomo should be centered in your view.

   Toast Your First Tuscan Sunset

   Open your wine from Pitti Gola and toast to the week ahead.

   If you bought wine at Pitti Gola, this is the moment. No corkscrew? Ask someone nearby—there's always a traveler with one. If you didn't bring wine, walk to Vip's Bar (below piazza level) for a glass. Toast as the Duomo turns golden. This ritual sets the tone for your entire trip.

   The light is perfect for 20-30 minutes.

   The magic light starts about 30 minutes before sunset and lasts 20 minutes. Shoot from the balustrade at the front of the piazza. Include the city AND some foreground (the balustrade, a wine glass, a silhouette). Best compositions have the Duomo centered with the Arno visible on the left.

   Walk to San Miniato for the Quiet Moment

   The church 5 minutes uphill has an even better view with 90% fewer people.

   After the sunset crowds peak, walk 5 min uphill on Via delle Porte Sante to San Miniato al Monte. This 1018 AD church has a cemetery terrace with the same view but almost no tourists. The monks sometimes sing Gregorian chants at vespers (5:30pm winter, 6pm summer). Check if vespers are happening—it's haunting.
