   From Montalcino, take SR2 north toward Siena. The road winds through the Crete Senesi—stop at any viewpoint where the clay hills catch your eye. Near Siena, take the tangenziale (ring road) unless you want to stop in the city.

   The landscape shifts dramatically.

   After Siena, take SS73 toward Colle di Val d'Elsa, then SS68 to Cecina and finally SS1 (Via Aurelia) south to Bolgheri. The landscape changes from Tuscan hills to coastal pines and then the Mediterranean appears. The contrast with inland Tuscany is striking.
