Walk into De Krans tasting room in Calitzdorp (you can't miss it in a town of 4,000) and ask for the Cape Vintage Reserve.    Find the Vines That Were Mistaken for Shiraz

   In the 1970s, patriarch Oupa Daniel Nel drove home from the Swartland with his Chevy El Camino packed with vine cuttings labeled 'Pinotage' and 'Shiraz.' The family planted them. When the first harvest came, his son Carel—studying oenology at Stellenbosch—examined the grapes and realized: NOT Shiraz. Tinta Barocca. One of the mainstay grapes of Portuguese port. Instead of ripping them out, Carel flew to Portugal, befriended Douro port producers, and returned to make South Africa's finest port-style wines. During your Boplaas tasting, ask the staff: 'Tell me about the accidental Tinta Barocca.' Watch their faces light up. Then taste the Boplaas Cape Vintage Reserve Port 2020 (Platinum Award, 2024 Michelangelo Awards). The mistake became the legacy. The story is documented on the estate timeline if staff are too busy.

   Before port-style wines made Calitzdorp famous, there was muscadel. Fortified dessert wine made from Muscat a Petits Grains and Muscat de Frontignan grapes. Dutch settlers brought the vines in the 17th century. For 200+ years, Klein Karoo farmers drank muscadel after Sunday lunch, with dried peaches from the orchards. Intense aromas of orange blossom, rose petals, ripe peaches. Luscious sweetness, vibrant acidity. It's what grandmothers poured at weddings. At any tasting room—De Krans, Boplaas, Calitzdorp Wine Cellar, Axe Hill—ask: 'Can I taste your muscadel?' Often it's offered free after a port tasting, or as part of the standard flight. Pair it with dried apricots from a Montagu farm stall. This is 200 years of Klein Karoo in a glass. If you're too full, buy a bottle to take home. Muscadel keeps for months once opened.

   Four thousand people produce some of the finest fortified wines outside Portugal. A few streets, a couple of churches, historical buildings from the ostrich-feather boom era when feathers cost as much as diamonds. The railway brought prosperity once, then abandoned it. Wine kept the town alive. Park near the old railway station (now used for the annual Calitzdorp Expressed festival in June). Walk Voortrekker Street and Queen Street. Find the old Dutch Reformed Church (1853). Look for sandstone 'feather palaces'—mansions built when ostrich feathers were worth GBP 1,000 per pair in London (1900-1914). The same wealth funded the first vineyards. Ask locals about the Calitzdorp Expressed festival (June)—the renamed Port Festival that's run since 1992. The Calitzdorp Museum tells the town's story from feathers to port to near-ghost-town to wine renaissance.
