   Find Where Cape Wine's Rations Began

   The Castle's courtyard was where wine kept the VOC empire alive. Three times daily for 150 years, soldiers lined up here for their rations. The Dutch knew wine lasted longer than water on ships. They were half-right about why. Entry R50 (adults), R25 (children/students/seniors), free under 5. Open daily 9am-4pm. Stand in the Dolphin Pool courtyard -- the original 1679 entrance -- and do the math: thousands of sailors, three rations a day, 150 years. This is where Van Riebeeck's 12 bottles became an export commodity. If the courtyard's closed for an event, Castle guides can point you to the historical markers.

   Climb the Ramparts Where Cannon Defended the Wine Trade

   The cannons weren't guarding the Cape. They were guarding the ships that made Constantia more expensive than Burgundy at Versailles. Walk the ramparts between the five bastions -- Leerdam, Buuren, Katzenellenbogen, Nassau, Oranje. Each held cannon aimed at Table Bay. Look toward the bay and trace the route: ships past Robben Island, carrying wine to Europe and enslaved laborers back to work the vineyards. The bay's edge has receded since then. The trade route is the same. Included in your R50 entry. If rampart access is restricted for safety, ask to see the Castle's scale model. It shows how the bastions and wine cellars connected to the harbor.

   See the William Fehr Collection Wine Estate Paintings

   The only visual records of Constantia in its golden age. 17th-19th century Cape paintings showing Van der Stel's vineyards as they actually looked. Notice what the colonial artists included: enslaved workers in the background. Cape Dutch gables. Wagon roads carrying wine to the ships. These aren't neutral landscapes. They're propaganda for an export economy built on forced labor. The furniture, ceramics, and silverware in the collection came from the households that built that economy. Included in your R50 entry -- no extra fee. Ask staff which room has the estate paintings. Allow 30-45 minutes. If you're short on time, the Castle gift shop has postcards of the highlights.

   Find Autshumao's Story: First Robben Island Prisoner

   Autshumao was the Khoikhoi interpreter who made the early wine trade possible. He negotiated cattle deals between Van Riebeeck and the clans. When the Dutch started seizing Khoikhoi land for vineyards along the Liesbeeck River, he waged war. He lost. In 1659, he became the first political prisoner on Robben Island -- 305 years before Mandela. Then he did something almost no one else ever did: he stole a boat and escaped. Rowed 9km to shore. Ask Castle staff: "Where can I learn about Autshumao?" The Castle was the launch point for prisoners sent to the island. If there's no display, walk to the walls facing Table Bay. Robben Island is visible on clear days. He rowed that distance to freedom.
