   The name means "Beyond Expectation" in Afrikaans. One of the original Constantia farms carved from Van der Stel's 1685 land grant. The Mueller family rescued this from neglect in the 1980s -- 238 years of yellowwood beams, white-washed walls, and Cape Dutch gables that almost disappeared. Park near the main building on Klein Constantia Road. Walk the lawns between the thatched buildings. The estate shares a boundary with Klein Constantia. You're standing on land that produced the wine Napoleon demanded on his deathbed. If grounds are restricted, walk the perimeter along Klein Constantia Road. Historic buildings and mountain views visible from the street.

   Taste in the 18th-Century Thatched Cellar

   Five wines for R100 (about $5.50 USD). One of the best value tastings in Constantia. The tasting room has rare yellowwood ceilings and a terrace that connects directly to the vineyards. Ask for Hussey's Vlei Sauvignon Blanc -- consistently rated 4+ stars by Platter's Guide. Staff are friendly and pour generously. Charcuterie platters made in-house. Book via info@buitenverwachting.com or walk in (booking recommended in peak season). If fully booked, buy a bottle of their Sauvignon Blanc at the estate shop and drink it on the lawns. Same views, more relaxed.

   Hunt the Christine: The Red Named After Love

   At the tasting counter, ask specifically for the Christine. Bordeaux blend named after the owner's wife. 24 months in new French oak plus 3.5 years in bottle before release. Platter's 4.5 stars repeatedly. At ~$28 retail (R500-600 on estate), it's Cape Bordeaux at accessible pricing. Staff are proud to pour it. Notice the structure -- built to age 10-15 years. The blend changes slightly each vintage. If Christine isn't available for tasting, buy a bottle to open at the end of your Cape trip. You'll have the context by then to appreciate it.

   Beyond Restaurant sits in the historic thatched building dating to 1796. Sophisticated fine dining with contemporary South African cuisine. Fireplace-warmed in winter, terrace-cooled in summer. One of Constantia's hidden dining gems -- less famous than La Colombe but equally exceptional. Book via info@buitenverwachting.com at least 2-3 weeks ahead. Request vineyard views. Order 2-3 course seasonal menu or tasting menu with pairing. Budget R800-1,200 pp (about $45-65 USD). If Beyond is fully booked, Coffee BloC on site offers casual dining with homemade platters, charcuterie, and Quaffee roasted coffee.
