The Klein Karoo is the dried fruit capital of South Africa. Stone-fruit (apricots, peaches), table grapes, figs—sun-dried using methods unchanged for 200 years. Along Route 62, especially near Montagu, Barrydale, and Ladismith, look for hand-painted signs saying 'Padstal' (farm stall), 'Droë Vrugte' (dried fruit), or 'Plaasprodukte' (farm products). Farm stalls sell dried apricots (sweet and tangy), peaches (chewy and intense), raisins, figs, biltong (dried meat), homemade preserves, rusks, and local Muscadel wine. Akkerboom Trading Store near Barrydale is famous for fresh fruit and homemade goods. Stop at any padstal that looks interesting. Taste dried fruit samples (most offer free tasting). Buy a mixed bag of apricots, peaches, and figs. Ask about drying methods—many still use solar drying on racks. Notice the intense, concentrated flavors. This is how the region has preserved fruit for centuries before refrigeration. Montagu town has several farm product shops on Church Street if you miss roadside stalls.
