   Adam Tas kept a diary in 1705-1706 documenting the Governor's corruption at Vergelegen. He and 62 farmers smuggled a petition directly to Amsterdam—bypassing the Governor entirely. The VOC believed them and fired the Governor. Tas spent 13 months in the 'Black Hole' dungeon at Cape Castle for it. When he got out, he named his farm LIBERTAS. Latin for freedom. You're standing on it. Oude Libertas Amphitheatre grounds, Adam Tas Road. Open to the public. His original house stood where the amphitheatre complex is now. Walk the grounds. Look for historical markers. If you find nothing, walk 10 minutes to Stellenbosch Dorp Street—the historic heart where Tas conspired. The architecture dates to his era.

   Read the Diary That Ends Mid-Sentence

   The diary is THE primary source for early Cape history. Dutch authorities tried to destroy it. Transcripts survived in the Van Dessin collection at the South African Library. When copyists made transcripts, they marked places where Tas 'spoke too much against the Governor' with crosses. The diary ends mid-sentence on February 28, 1706. The day soldiers arrested him. Search 'Dagboek van Adam Tas 1705-1706' on Internet Archive before visiting Libertas. Read a few pages. Understanding what he wrote makes standing on his land hit differently. Or ask at Oude Libertas reception for materials about Adam Tas. Not all staff know the story. Some do.

   Walk the Route Tas Took Before His Arrest

   From his farm into town. To trade, to meet farmers, to conspire. He made this walk dozens of times before they came for him. Start at Oude Libertas. Walk northeast 2km via Adam Tas Road toward Dorp Street. Oak-lined, Cape Dutch architecture, many buildings from his lifetime. Look for year plaques—1700s. The Stellenbosch Museum complex on Ryneveld Street has 18th-century buildings you can enter. Feel the geography. Farm to town. The journey he made before everything changed. If walking isn't feasible, drive it and park on Dorp Street. The point is to feel the distance.
