   Drive the 25km Pass That Crosses the River 25 Times

   You cross the river 25 times in 25km. Each drift (river crossing) has its own name and history. The pass was completed in just 223 days and opened March 3, 1858. Petrus Johannes Meiring—a farmer from De Rust who made the first successful recorded crossing in 1800—is commemorated in the name. Meiringspoort Pass on the N12 connects De Rust (south) with Klaarstroom and Prince Albert (north). Drive either direction—the full pass is 25km through the Swartberg Mountains. Drive slowly. Count the drifts as you cross them (some are concrete, some are low-water crossings). Pull over at the designated viewpoints to see the towering rock walls—some sections rise hundreds of meters vertically. Watch for baboons on the roadside. The drive takes 30-45 minutes if you stop frequently. If water levels are high (winter/spring), some drifts may be flooded. Check road conditions at De Rust or Klaarstroom before driving. You can drive to the entrance, walk a short section, and return.

   Read 250 Million Years of Geology in the Rock Walls

   The Swartberg Mountains are one of the BEST EXPOSED fold mountain chains on Earth. You're looking at rocks that were compressed and folded like pleats 250 million years ago during the Cape Orogeny (mountain-building event). The horizontal layers you see were originally flat-lying sediments on an ancient seabed. Tectonic forces pushed them upward and folded them into vertical or near-vertical positions. The Groot River carved through these folded layers over millions of years, exposing the geological history. Stop at any pullout viewpoint. The midpoint (around drift 12-13) has the most dramatic rock formations. Look at the rock walls—notice the distinct horizontal layering (sedimentary beds) now tilted or vertical. Trace the folding patterns with your eyes. You'll see S-curves and Z-folds. Touch the rock if you can access it safely—it's mostly quartzite and sandstone, formed from ancient beach sand compressed into rock. If geology isn't your thing, just appreciate the sheer scale. These walls are hundreds of meters tall, carved by a single river.

   Find the Waterfall and Picnic Spot

   A permanent waterfall cascades down the rock face into a pool. This is the traditional picnic and rest stop on the pass—locals and travelers have been stopping here since the 1858 opening. Approximately 16km from the southern entrance (De Rust side), look for a parking area and waterfall on the right side of the road. It's the main stop within the pass. Park safely off the road. Walk to the waterfall base. Feel the spray and the temperature drop. Notice the ferns and mosses growing on the wet rocks—rare vegetation in this otherwise dry region. The water is ice-cold (mountain stream-fed). If it's hot, dip your hands in the pool (swimming is not advised due to currents and depth). If the waterfall is reduced to a trickle (late summer/autumn), the setting is still beautiful for a photo or rest stop.

   Trace the Route That Connected Two Karoos

   Meiringspoort is the gateway between the Little Karoo (south - semi-arid shrubland) and the Great Karoo (north - vast desert plateau). Before 1858, these regions were effectively cut off from each other—crossing the Swartberg range required long detours. Petrus Meiring's route opened trade, agriculture, and communication. Today, the N12 carries traffic between Oudtshoorn (ostrich farms, Cango Caves) and Prince Albert (remote Karoo town). The pass remains the fastest way through the Swartberg. From either entrance to the pass (De Rust or Klaarstroom), look at the surrounding landscape before entering the gorge. On the De Rust side, you're in the Little Karoo—shrubs, some orchards, wine farms. On the Klaarstroom side, you're entering the Great Karoo—flatter, drier, more expansive. The pass is the transition zone. Read the historical marker at the De Rust entrance (if still present) about Meiring and the 1858 completion.
