The Story
Chenin Blanc makes everything—bone-dry, off-dry, sweet, sparkling, still. Loire's Vouvray can be any style, and the label doesn't tell you which. It's wine roulette.
Insider Story
Chenin Blanc is Loire Valley's signature white. It's planted in Vouvray, Savennières, Montlouis, Anjou, and more. The grape is incredibly versatile—it makes dry wines, off-dry wines, sweet wines (botrytis), and sparkling wines (Crémant de Loire).
But here's the problem: Vouvray labels don't indicate sweetness. A bottle could be bone-dry (sec), off-dry (demi-sec), or sweet (moelleux). You have to know the producer or guess. It's confusing.
South Africa grows more Chenin Blanc than anywhere (called 'Steen'). For decades, it was bulk wine. Now, old-vine Chenin Blanc from Swartland is world-class—rivaling Loire at lower prices.
Technical Deep Dive
Chenin Blanc has extremely high acidity (7-9 g/L, similar to Riesling). This acidity balances residual sugar and allows aging (30-50 years for top examples).
Botrytis (noble rot) is common in Loire. Humid autumn mornings create perfect conditions. Botrytis-affected Chenin Blanc (Coteaux du Layon, Bonnezeaux, Quarts de Chaume) is intensely sweet and ages forever.
Sparkling: Crémant de Loire is traditional-method sparkling Chenin Blanc. It rivals Champagne at 1/3 the price.
Industry Secrets
South African old-vine Chenin Blanc is the world's best value. 50-80 year-old bush vines, dry-farmed, $20-40 bottles. Mullineux, Badenhorst, and Sadie Family rival $80-150 Loire. Nobody knows about it.
