The Story
Godello was nearly extinct by 1970—fewer than 10 hectares remained in Spain. A single producer (Godeval) saved it. Now it's Spain's most exciting white grape, rivaling Albariño.
Insider Story
Godello grew in Valdeorras (inland Galicia) for centuries. But the region was poor and remote. Farmers abandoned vineyards for cities. By 1970, Godello was nearly extinct.
In 1985, Horacio Fernández (Godeval) decided to save Godello. He replanted old vineyards, made modern wine, and lobbied for recognition. Critics discovered it. 'This is Spain's best white grape!'
Godello exploded. Plantings jumped from 10 hectares (1980) to 1,500+ hectares (2020). Prices rose from $10 to $30-60 for top examples.
But Godello's success created problems. Producers planted on inferior sites. Quality became inconsistent. The best Godello comes from old vines on slate soils.
Technical Deep Dive
Godello has moderate acidity (5.5-6.5 g/L), citrus and stone fruit aromatics, and a slightly bitter/mineral finish. Alcohol: 12.5-14% ABV.
Slate soils (Valdeorras, Bierzo) produce mineral, structured Godello. Granite soils produce softer, fruitier styles.
Oak: some producers use oak aging (6-12 months) for complexity. Others use stainless steel for freshness. Both styles work.
Industry Secrets
Bierzo Godello is criminally undervalued. Same grape as Valdeorras, 30% cheaper. Producers like Descendientes de J. Palacios and Mengoba make $20-40 Godello that rivals $50-80 Valdeorras.
