The Story
Greco means 'Greek'—the grape was brought to Italy by Greek colonizers 2,500+ years ago. Greco di Tufo (Campania) is the benchmark—mineral, citrusy, age-worthy. It's one of Italy's most underrated whites.
Insider Story
Greco di Tufo grows on volcanic tufo (ite) soils in Campania. The wines are mineral, citrusy, with a distinctive sulfur/flint note (from volcanic soil).
For decades, Greco was bulk wine—over-cropped, oxidized, forgettable. Then, producers like Benito Ferrara, Pietracupa, and Mastroberardino started making serious Greco. Critics noticed.
Greco ages surprisingly well—10-15 years for top examples. Aged Greco develops honey, almond, and petrol notes (like Riesling).
But Greco remains obscure. Most consumers have never heard of it. Prices stay low ($15-40) even for top examples.
Technical Deep Dive
Greco has high acidity (6-7 g/L), citrus and almond aromatics, and a distinctive sulfur/flint note (volcanic terroir). Alcohol: 12-13.5% ABV.
Tufo soils (volcanicite) produce mineral, structured Greco. The sulfur note is terroir-driven, not a fault.
Oak: rarely used. Stainless steel preserves Greco's freshness and minerality.
Industry Secrets
Greco di Tufo DOCG is one of Italy's best white wine values. $15-30 bottles rival $50-80 wines from more famous regions. Benito Ferrara's 'Vigna Cicogna' ($25-40) is world-class.
