The Story
Lagrein is Alto Adige's darkest red. It's ink-black, powerful, and ages 15-20 years. For decades, it was dismissed as rustic. Now it's one of Italy's most exciting reds—alpine freshness with southern power.

Alto Adige is Italy's northernmost wine region. It's German-speaking, Austrian-influenced, and makes mostly white wine. Red wine was an afterthought.
Lagrein grew in the warmest sites (Bolzano basin, 250-300m). The wines were dark and tannic but lacked finesse. Nobody took them seriously.
In the 1990s-2000s, producers like Hofstätter, Elena Walch, and Alois Lageder started treating Lagrein seriously—low yields, oak aging, single-vineyard bottlings. The result was dark, structured, age-worthy Lagrein with alpine freshness. Critics loved it.
Technical Deep Dive
Lagrein has thick skins (deep color, high tannins: 3,000-3,500 mg/L), moderate acidity (5-6 g/L), and dark fruit with violet aromatics. Alcohol: 13-14.5% ABV.
Two styles: Lagrein Dunkel (dark, structured, oak-aged) and Lagrein Kretzer (rosé, fresh, unoaked). Dunkel is the serious style.
Bolzano's porphyry soils (volcanic) produce the most structured Lagrein. Higher-altitude sites (400-500m) produce more elegant styles.
