The Story
Muscadet is the world's perfect oyster wine—bone-dry, mineral, saline, low alcohol. It's made from Melon de Bourgogne, a grape so obscure it's only grown in one place: the Loire Valley's Atlantic coast.
Insider Story
Melon de Bourgogne was kicked out of Burgundy in 1709 after a brutal frost. It survived in the Loire's Pays Nantais, where it became Muscadet.
For decades, Muscadet was bulk wine—cheap, thin, forgettable. Then, in the 2000s, producers started making 'sur lie' Muscadet. The wine ages on its lees (dead yeast) for months, adding texture and complexity.
Cru Communaux (village designations) were created in 2011. Clisson, Gorges, and Le Pallet are the top crus. These wines age 10-20 years—nothing like simple Muscadet.
But Muscadet remains undervalued. Top cru Muscadet ($20-40) rivals $60-100 Chablis. Nobody knows because 'Muscadet' sounds cheap.
Technical Deep Dive
Melon de Bourgogne has neutral aromatics, high acidity (7-8 g/L), and low alcohol (11-12.5% ABV). The grape is a blank canvas—terroir dominates.
Sur lie aging: wine stays on lees for 6-18 months. Lees add texture, creaminess, and protect against oxidation. The best Muscadet is always 'sur lie.'
Cru Communaux: Clisson (granite, structured), Gorges (gabbro, mineral), Le Pallet (gneiss, aromatic). Each cru has distinct character.
Industry Secrets
Muscadet ages brilliantly. A 10-year-old cru Muscadet tastes like aged Burgundy—toasty, honeyed, complex. But nobody cellars Muscadet because it's 'cheap.' Buy cru Muscadet and age it.
