The Story

From Romania's Drăgășani region comes this indigenous gem—Negru de Drăgășani ('Black of Drăgășani') produces concentrated, age-worthy reds that rival the country's more famous Fetească Neagră.

Insider Story

Drăgășani is one of Romania's oldest wine regions—archaeological evidence suggests winemaking here for 6,000 years. But the region was marginalized under Communism. State cooperatives produced bulk wine; quality was irrelevant.

Negru de Drăgășani survived because local farmers maintained traditional vineyards. When privatization came (1990s), these old vines became the foundation for quality wine.

The grape is obscure even within Romania. Fetească Neagră gets the attention; Negru de Drăgășani is the insider's choice. Producers like Avincis and Prince Știrbey make excellent examples that few outside Romania have tasted.

Production is tiny—perhaps 200 hectares total. Finding the wine requires effort, but rewards are significant.

Technical Deep Dive

Negru de Drăgășani produces full-bodied wines with substantial tannins (2,800-3,500 mg/L), moderate acidity (5-6 g/L), and dark fruit character (black cherry, plum, chocolate).

The grape thrives in Drăgășani's hilly terrain. South-facing slopes at 200-400m elevation produce the best fruit. The continental climate provides warm days and cool nights.

Flavor profile: black cherry, plum, chocolate, tobacco, and spice. The wine is rich and concentrated—compare to good Cahors Malbec or Madiran Tannat.

Winemaking: long maceration (3-4 weeks) and oak aging (18-24 months, often new French) are standard. The grape's massive tannins need time and oak to integrate.

Aging: top Negru de Drăgășani ages 15-25 years. The tannins soften beautifully with age. Patience is rewarded.

Industry Secrets

Negru de Drăgășani is virtually unknown outside Romania. This creates extraordinary value—serious, age-worthy wine at $20-40.

The grape competes with Fetească Neagră for 'Romania's best red' status. Both are excellent; styles differ. Negru is more tannic and concentrated.

Avincis is the benchmark producer. Their 'Cuvée Oana' and 'Negru de Drăgășani' bottlings showcase the grape's potential.
