The Story

Picpoul de Pinet is France's answer to Muscadet—bone-dry, citrusy, saline, perfect with oysters. It grows next to the Mediterranean's oyster beds. The pairing is literal.

Insider Story

Picpoul means 'lip-stinger' in Occitan—a reference to the grape's high acidity. It grows in Pinet (Languedoc), right next to the Thau lagoon's famous oyster beds.

For decades, Picpoul was bulk wine—cheap, simple, sold in 5-liter jugs. Then, in the 2000s, producers started making serious Picpoul. The wines were crisp, mineral, saline—perfect with seafood.

Picpoul became Languedoc's trendy white. Exports exploded, especially to the UK. It's now one of France's best-selling white wines.

But success brought problems. Some producers over-crop (80+ hL/ha), making thin wine. The best Picpoul comes from old vines and low yields.

Technical Deep Dive

Picpoul has high acidity (7-8 g/L), citrus and saline aromatics, and low alcohol (12-13% ABV).

The Mediterranean climate is hot, but sea breezes keep Picpoul fresh. Harvest is early (late August) to preserve acidity.

No oak—stainless steel only. Oak would mask Picpoul's freshness.

Industry Secrets

Old-vine Picpoul (40-60 years) is the sweet spot. $12-20 bottles from producers like Domaine Félines Jourdan and Château de la Mirande rival $25-40 wines. Look for 'vieilles vignes' on the label.
