The Story
Torrontés is Argentina's signature white grape. It's intensely aromatic—rose, lychee, citrus. For decades, it was bulk wine. Then, in the 2000s, producers started making serious Torrontés. It's now Argentina's answer to Gewürztraminer.
Insider Story
Torrontés is a natural crossing of Muscat of Alexandria and Criolla Chica (País). It happened spontaneously in Argentina—nobody bred it intentionally. There are three types: Torrontés Riojano (best), Torrontés Sanjuanino, and Torrontés Mendocino.
For decades, Torrontés was over-cropped and oxidized. The wines were flabby and bitter. Nobody took it seriously.
In the 2000s, producers in Salta (high altitude, 1,700-2,000m) started making fresh, aromatic Torrontés. The altitude preserves acidity. The wines are crisp, floral, balanced. Critics loved it.
But Torrontés is polarizing. The aromatics are intense—some find it overwhelming. It's Argentina's Gewürztraminer—love it or hate it.
Technical Deep Dive
Torrontés has intense aromatics (terpenes from Muscat parentage), moderate acidity (5.5-6.5 g/L), and moderate alcohol (13-14% ABV).
Altitude is crucial. Low-altitude Torrontés (Mendoza, 600-900m) is flabby and bitter. High-altitude Torrontés (Salta, 1,700-2,000m) is crisp and balanced.
Winemaking: cold fermentation (preserve aromatics), stainless steel (no oak), early bottling (preserve freshness). Oak kills Torrontés.
Industry Secrets
Cafayate (Salta) is Torrontés' Grand Cru. The vineyards are among the world's highest (1,700-2,000m). Colomé, Etchart, and El Porvenir make $15-30 Torrontés that rivals $40-60 Gewürztraminer.
