Bolivia
The quote above Bodegas Kohlberg cellar door says it all: "Winemaking in the rest of the world ends where we begin." At 1,900-3,000 meters, these are among the highest commercial vineyards on Earth. Jesuit missionaries started making wine here in the 1600s. The German immigrant Franz Kuhlmann revived it in 1963. Now Bolivia produces medal-winning wines that almost no one outside South America knows exist.
