History

Benedictine monks established viticulture at Abbaye de Bourgueil (990 AD). Legend credits Abbot Breton with introducing Cabernet Franc from Bordeaux - hence local name "Breton." Catherine and Pierre Breton (unrelated to Abbot) became natural wine icons 1980s, proving Loire could rival Burgundy for elegant reds. Domaine de la Butte (Jacky Blot) and Domaine des Ouches maintain traditional excellence.
