History
Wine production since at least 10th century; first documented wines 1240. Marcel Richaud founded his domaine 1974 at age 19, starting with 14 hectares and a roofless cellar. In the 1990s became leader of natural wine movement. Applied for cru 2008; after INAO reduced area from 1,350 to 1,088 hectares, Cairanne officially elevated June 29, 2016.

- 60% of vines over 30 years old, 400 hectares (nearly 1,000 acres) over 50 years old - extraordinary old vine concentration. INAO cut 262 hectares during cru approval, sparking controversy as producers weren't allowed to meet with experts.
