Canon-Fronsac
🇫🇷 France
AOCThe premium heart of Fronsac - where "starfish limestone" and famous Fronsac molasse create Saint-Émilion quality at satellite prices
Region profile
History
The name "Canon" derives from the Canons Regular (clergy) who cultivated these slopes centuries ago. In 1925, growers created separate syndicats recognizing the superior terroir. Canon-Fronsac achieved AOC status in 1964.
- Climate
- Geological extension of Saint-Émilion limestone plateau; asteriated (starfish) limestone with clay-limestone on slopes; highest elevations in Fronsac; 250-300 hectares

- Château Cassagne Haut-Canon - 15ha single block on Fronsac molasse and limestone, truffle oaks grow on plateau (indicating exceptional terroir). $20-35/bottle.

Facts
- Canon-Fronsac is the geological EXTENSION of Saint-Émilion's famous limestone plateau - literally the same rock formation. The 40 estates share 250 hectares, making this smaller than most single Saint-Émilion Premier Grand Cru estates.
