History

Legend claims Emperor Probus introduced vines from Dalmatia to these sun-drenched slopes in the 3rd century AD - the hillsides "grilled" by the sun gave this place its name. AOC granted 1936, making it one of France's original nine AOCs. The Neyret-Gachet family owned the estate from 1825 until 2011, when sold to François Pinault's Artémis Domaines (owners of Château Latour). Declared a National Heritage site in 1976.

Climate: South-facing natural amphitheater on steep granite cliffs between Vérin and Saint-Michel-sur-Rhône; ancient biotite granite with sandy soils; 102 terraces at 150-250m elevation; sheltered from cold north winds
Signature wines: Château-Grillet Viognier - owned by François Pinault's Artémis Domaines since 2011 (alongside Château Latour). Organic and biodynamic farming, hand-worked terraces. Production: ~10,000 bottles annually. Price: $400-500+ per bottle.
What sets it apart: One of only TWO monopole AOCs in all of France (with Romanée-Conti). 102 terraces create microclimate so distinct it merited its own appellation separate from surrounding Condrieu. Sandy granite soils produce Viognier of impossible elegance.

Facts

At just 3.8 hectares across 102 hand-built terraces, this is one of France's smallest AOCs. Prior to 1971, only 1.7 hectares were planted. The 2022 vintage sells for $432 average per bottle.
