Roussillon's FIRST dry wine appellation, sharing identical boundaries with sweet Banyuls. The same terraced schist vineyards plunging into the Mediterranean produce both - the grapes' destiny (dry vs. fortified) decided at harvest.

History

Phoenicians established a trading post at Collioure in the 7th century BC, bringing vines from Greece. The Knights Templar revolutionized viticulture with their "peus de galls" drainage system still used today. The Treaty of the Pyrenees (1659) returned this Catalan territory to France. For centuries, grapes made only Banyuls (fortified). In 1971, André Parcé of Domaine du Mas Blanc led the campaign for dry wine recognition - Collioure became Roussillon's first dry wine AOC. Whites were added in 2003.

Signature wines
Domaine du Mas Blanc "Clos du Moulin" - Three generations of the Parcé family have driven both Banyuls and Collioure appellations. Dr. Gaston Parcé began bottling in 1921; son Dr. André Parcé created the Collioure AOC in 1971; grandson Jean-Michel continues today with 19 hectares including cuttings from Beaucastel, Chave, and Tempier (gifts from family friends). The Clos du Moulin (80% Syrah, 20% Counoise) from gravel and sand shows dried roses and smoked meat. Around $30-45.
What sets it apart
Same vines, same terraces, same appellation boundaries as Banyuls - but completely different wines. The grapes' fate is decided at harvest: picked early for Collioure's electric dry wines, or left to raisinate for Banyuls' sweet intensity. Dual citizenship in a bottle.

Facts

  • Over 6,000 kilometers of dry-stone schist walls (feixas) support the terraced vineyards cascading toward the Mediterranean. Yields average just 15-30 hectolitres per hectare - less than ONE bottle per vine - from vines averaging 40 years old.
