History

Romans planted Viognier on these granite slopes. By 1940 AOC creation, only 6 hectares survived - appellation nearly extinct. Francis Vernay planted Coteau de Vernon 1937; son Georges Vernay (1930-2017) became "Pope of Condrieu," single-handedly saving Viognier from extinction. He supplied cuttings globally, launching worldwide Viognier plantings. Christine Vernay (daughter) took over 1996, converted to organic; granddaughter Emma joined 2020 as 4th generation.
