History
The village of Boutenac sits between the Nielle and Orbieu rivers on terraces formed from ancient Pyrenean alluvium. Winegrowers worked for decades to distinguish this pocket from the sprawling 10,000-hectare Corbières. Success came February 4, 2005, when INAO recognized Corbières-Boutenac as the first Premier Cru within Corbières, following Minervois-La Livinière's 1999 precedent. In 2024, the European Union registered the simplified name "AOP Boutenac," completing the journey to independent identity. Just 26 producers and 4 cooperatives craft these wines.
- Climate
- Mediterranean with maritime influence; terraces of ancient rolled pebbles, sandstone, and limestone at 80-100m elevation; 2,513 hectares potential, ~180 hectares under AOC; garrigue scrubland surrounds vineyards
- Signature wines
- Château La Voulte-Gasparets "Cuvée Romain Pauc" - Six generations of the Reverdy family have farmed this 60-hectare estate backed by Boutenac's sandstone hills. The Romain Pauc cuvée (50% old-vine Carignan) achieved "Coup de Coeur" status in the Hachette Guide (2000, 2002). Patrick Reverdy, now joined by son Laurent, expresses the quintessence of what noble Carignan can achieve. Around $15-20.
- What sets it apart
- This is Carignan's vindication. While the rest of France paid farmers to rip it out, Boutenac doubled down, proving that properly farmed old-vine Carignan on the right terroir creates wines of unexpected depth and complexity.
Facts
- Corbières-Boutenac was the FIRST appellation anywhere to legally mandate Carignan as the primordial grape (30-50% required). After decades of Carignan being ripped out across the south, this 2005 Cru declared: the "weed grape" can be a thoroughbred.
