History

Name from Celtic "burnt earth" reflecting dark granite soils. Louis XV and Cardinal Richelieu admired Cornas centuries before AOC status. Until 1950s, most wine sold in bulk to négociants. Auguste Clape pioneered estate bottling 1950s. Modern era began 1980s with Thierry Allemand and others proving Cornas could rival Hermitage.
