History
The Phocaean Greeks introduced grapevines when they founded Marseilles around 600 BC - making these vineyards among the OLDEST IN FRANCE. Romans expanded cultivation, then clergy and nobility continued through the Middle Ages. By the 14th century, Provençal winemaking was well established. The term "Côtes de Provence" first appeared in the 19th century. Mass tourism on the Côte d'Azur from the 1950s transformed Provençal rosé into "the wine of summer" - a brilliant marketing pivot that created the modern rosé phenomenon. Today, Provence rosé is a global lifestyle symbol.
