Until 1971, Gigondas was classified as Côtes du Rhône-Villages. After 20 years lobbying, became independent cru appellation 1971. Name from Latin "jocunditas" (joy/pleasure). White wine production approved September 2022, making 2023 first vintage for Gigondas Blanc - major expansion after 51 years as red-only appellation.
